For all my intellectualism (I don’t even know if that is a word) and my desire to not conform and think critically and intelligently in all I say and do…..
I still get bloody excited and hung up over the World Series.
You know…

October 26, 2008Plurkin’
October 26, 2008The good people at my virtual knitting group (we meet via Stickam on Saturday nights) have now brought me over to the Plurk phenomenon.
I envision many, many wasted lunch hours in my future.
Holiday Knitting Has Begun!
October 25, 2008Four scarves and a baby blanket. It is not a lot but I only have about 8 – 9 weeks to do it. And we’re already underway with the Pride of the Pinstripes Scarf, adapted from Lion Brand’s Harry Potter Wizard Scarf. I am using Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in New York Yankees colors (navy blue and white) that I just happened to have in my stash for another intended project.
Earlier this week, I also finished the ribbed scarf I had been working on in the Red Heart Bay Print for my boyfriend. Since the yarn kept tangling, thereby cementing my desire to never buy Red Heart again unless requested by someone, I ended up making the scarf about six inches shorter than the desired length in the pattern. The colorway still showed the ribbing very well and I know Jeff (that’s the boyfriend) will like the color. The experience has killed my desire to work with Red Heart again. I’ll use what i have in stash and that will end my business with them.
Photography – Princeton, NJ
October 25, 2008Lest you do not think my only hobbies are knitting and gradaute school (though I do have some knitting photos to share in another post), I do have a set a photos for perusal.
Princeton, NJ – August 29, 2008
I took these photos Labor Day weekend but only got to editing and publishing on Flickr this weekend. As you may know from my former blog on mac.com, my father was hospitalized shortly after Labor Day and spent five weeks in Princeton for treatment and recovery. Thus my desire to view the city through an artistic lens was muted; for me Princeton was the destination of a long drive to the hospital to visit with my ill parent. Now that he is home and recovering (well, I might add, thanks to the good staff at the hospital and his own will) I can begin to put those painful memories behind me and appreciate the city for its unique color and character once more.
Good Earworm
October 21, 2008Fans of folk and acoustic music will like this artist. Her first album, Since the Fire, is on iTunes.
And by the way, I went to high school with her. She was three years behind me (knew my sister) and had the talent for music way back when we all bopped around Woodbridge High.
Here’s hoping she gets some radio play very soon. (I see her fitting in very well with WXPN.) She certainly deserves all the success in the world.
The Proper Care and Feeding of Library Materials
October 16, 2008Part of my Conservation and Preservation class this semester requires monitoring of several listservs in the field for interesting news and developments. This video from the Kansas State University Library on proper care and handling of library materials is too humorous not to share with the general public.
The Girl With Two Needles
October 16, 2008One of my newest hobbies is knitting. I took up the fiber arts this summer out of a desire to learn something new and make good use of my three months of downtime from graduate school. (Of course, then I had to go and spoil it all by getting an assistantship, but one does not turn down the professional opportunities, networking and such, a desire to make a deeper mark in librarianship, when they are offered. And a $1500 paycheck.)
Some of my favorite projects of late:
This ribbed scarf pattern comes from the website of the Lion Brand Yarn Company. It’s a basic knit 4 purl 4 ribbing. The pattern knits up quick and looks lovely in variegated yarns – the top being Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice Purple Print, the bottom being a Red Heart Super Saver Bay Print. (Many knitters shudder when they hear the words “Red Heart.” for it is the cheapest of cheap yarn. The sizing makes it stiff to work with, but it’s not so bad. I am learning to appreciate and love finer yarns that are not acrylic. Lion Brand is becoming my favorite acrylic yarn – inexpensive, very soft, and very good quality.)
This is Kris Percival’s Broken Rib Scarf, which you can find in the “book” Knitting to Go; 25 Chic and Easy Patterns. (Click on the link and you’ll see why I placed the word book in quotation marks.) The pattern is a broken 2×2 rib – five rows of knit 2 purl two ribbing, then the next five rows of purl 2 knit 2 ribbing. Fun to do but hard to see and appreciate the pattern with a variegated yarn. (I’m using another Red Heart Super Saver pattern, Earth and Sky, that I received as a birthday gift from my mom. The scarf is for her.) I will use this pattern again, but I am going to work with Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride in the Chianti colorway.
Moved In
October 14, 2008In an effort to simplfy my life as much as possible, I am now combining my two previous blogs on the Mac forum (32 Flavors and Then Some and The Garden State Librarian) and moving them to the web-based portal of WordPress. I’ve made this decision for many reasons, including dissatisfaction with MobileMe (cost and otherwise), a desire to streamline my life, and a hope that a the more easily accessible portal of WordPress will stimulate my creative juices and motivation to post even more.
So welcome aboard. Knitting, photography, librarianship – you will find it all here.
